The NAV workshop will be held at Dedan Kimathi University of Technology (DeKUT) main campus, located just west of the foothills of Mt. Kenya. DeKUT is pursuing to establish a Volcanology Centre of Excellence for the East African region, and other volcanic areas in Africa but also to host a Geothermal Energy Training and Research Institute. The Centre’s main focus will be applying volcanology to geothermal energy exploration and field management.
DeKUT was awarded a Charter for establishment as a full-fledged University of Technology in 2012.
Currently the University offers a wide range of programmes at both Undergraduate and Postgraduate levels in the following schools and institutes: School of Engineering, School of Science, School of Computer Science and Information Technology, School of Business Management and Economics, School of Health Sciences, Institute of Geomatics, GIS and Remote Sensing (IGGRes), Institute of Food Bio-Resources Technology (IFBT), Institute of Tourism and Hospitality Management (IToHM), Institute of Institute of Criminology, Forensics and Security Studies ( ICFoSS), Institute of Pedagogy and Academic Writing Skills (IPAWS), Geothermal Energy Training and Research Institute (GeTRI) and Institute of Technical and Professional Studies (ITPS).
These programmes are a vital demonstration of the University’s commitment to becoming a premier technological University within the global arena. The University has adequate facilities and equipment to support the programme. These include lecture rooms, well-equipped laboratories and workshops, and a modern library. DeKUT continues to implement a physical facilities development programme to support the fruition of its vision and propel it so as to emerge as an unparalleled technological University with a major impact on both national and global development agendas; emphasizing on research.
Dedan Kimathi University of Technology has invested heavily in its ICT infrastructure, established to ensure that IT infrastructure, service delivery norms and new applications deployments are in line with current industry trends and that the systems put in place add true value to the University. The ICT center provides abroad range of services to the University's researchers, Lecturers, staff and students. These services include the following: Network Fiber Optic backbone infrastructure and a dedicated bandwidth of 150mbps at the main campus in Nyeri, while the Nairobi Campus has a bandwidth of 15Mbps. This is via a high speed fiber connection from KENET.
The programs at DeKUT are facilitated by both university staff and industry collaborators. For example, MoUs between DeKUT and the geothermal industry in the country enable usage of each other’s equipment and joint research. Website address: www.dkut.ac.ke
Nyeri County is one of the 47 counties in the Republic of Kenya. It’s located about 170 Km north of Nairobi, the country’s capital, and within the central highlands of Kenya sandwiched between the eastern slopes of the volcanic Aberdare Ranges (on the edge of the Rift Valley) and the western slopes of the snow-capped Mt. Kenya (the second highest Mt in Africa at about 5200m) which is an extinct volcano. Being the fertile central Kenya region, Nyeri's main economic activities are large-scale farming including dairy, coffee, and tea as well as subsistence farming of maize fruit and vegetables. The county has lush green vegetation and experiences a cool and wet climate during June-July, with temperatures between 12-21°C.
Main tourist attractions include the Aberdare and Mt Kenya National Parks which are associated with several tourist hotels, and the grave of the founder of Scouts, Lt. Gen. Lord Baden-Powell which is a pilgrimage place for the worldwide Scouting movement.
The NAV meeting is being financially sponsored principally by the International Union of Geodesy (IUGG), the Geophysics and International Association of Seismology and Physics of the Earth's Interior (IASPEI) as lead applicant, and the International Association of Sedimentologists (IAS).
We appreciate all the other contributions and welcome any proposition.
